Philip Edward Harding Trees A work in progress

| Title: Trees
Media: Mixed fiber ropes, bicycle wheels without tires, Krylon spray paint Size: Variable. My studio ceiling is 9'-6" high, but most ropes are about 28 feet long, so take off 2 feet for the wheel and they can be installed up to 13 feet. Double the number of ropes and hang them from the rims instead of over the top and they can reach 28 feet or maybe 25 to allow them to spread out at the ground. Date: Variable. Pictures were taken on 10/22/2024
Note: The first two pictures are stage one. I then doubled the number of ropes.

Trees I've been experimenting with the idea of using my ropes in installation projects. One idea was just to drop hundreds of single ropes from a ceiling to make a sort of hanging forest. There exists a kind of clip for drop ceiling grids that provides a hook from which you can hang things. That would allow me to fill a room with hanging ropes, but the downside is that the clips force the ropes into formal rows following the grid lines. I also don’t know how many I could put up before their collective weight starts to become a problem, or what happens to the grid if someone pulls on a rope. As installed above, I have heavy duty hooks going into the bottom cord of roof trusses. Any installation location will need to have structural support. An idea that I would like to try would combine the trees with the hundreds of ropes from The Wall of Infinite Diversity. I could imagine ropes hung to form the walls of a labyrinth which, after several minutes of navigating dimly lit corridors, opens up into a grove of enormous trees. The problem with any installation project is finding somewhere whose policies and facility allow it. Then, even once I've solved that I'll need a crew to help set it up. Going up and down a ladder to hang the ropes required I take multiple breaks. Hanging the wall is less taxing but will take several people all afternoon. Would you like to help? I can pay you in ropes.
