Comments: Over several years I explored the "Patterns in Space" theme through dozens of variations. Underlying most of them is the idea of contrasting a fluid, organic, ever changing pattern of spheres against a static geometric pattern or grid. With the spheres I would usually try to maximize the variety of their size and spacing but within a certain limit. This keeps the eyes drifting and relaxed. But then the frames break up the flow and lead the eyes along rigid lines until they pick up on the spheres again and drift back into space. The girds then give an underlying structure and body to the whole composition (although I often allow empty space, the black of the paper, be its own substance).
